I’m Charlie, an independent environmental journalist and geography student with a passion for uncovering the stories where people and the natural world intersect.
From hiking active volcanoes in Iceland to diving coral reefs in Indonesia searching of the effects of climate change, I believe the most compelling stories are found in the field. My work combines first-hand exploration, scientific research and local voices to document the environmental challenges shaping our planet.
Through long-form features, photography and documentary-style storytelling, I aim to bridge the gap between science and the public, making complex environmental issues both accessible and deeply human. Rather than simply reporting what is happening, I strive to understand why it is happening, who it affects and what can be done to protect the landscapes and communities at the heart of each story.
Joe’s Journal is a collection of these investigations—a place to share the people I’ve met, the places I’ve explored and the stories that deserve to be told.
My years working as a commercial diver across the world taught me far more than how to work beneath the surface. They reinforced a mindset that has always driven me: a curiosity to look beyond what is immediately visible and ask the questions that often go unanswered.
Whether descending onto offshore infrastructure, exploring coral reefs or travelling through remote communities, I have always been drawn to understanding what lies beneath the obvious. That curiosity extends beyond the ocean. It is the same instinct that leads me to hike volcanoes, speak with local communities, follow environmental stories back to their source and search for the connections between geology, ecosystems and the people who depend upon them.
I believe the most meaningful stories are rarely found from a distance. They emerge through observation, conversation and a willingness to immerse yourself in unfamiliar environments. My work is driven by exploration—not simply of landscapes, but of ideas, cultures and the complex relationships that shape our natural world.
As both a journalist and a geographer, my aim is to move beyond headlines and first impressions, uncovering the deeper forces behind environmental change and sharing the stories that too often remain unseen.
